CNN Undergoes Major Restructuring, Cuts 100 Jobs to Focus on Digital Future

CNN is cutting around 100 jobs as part of a plan to restructure its operations and strengthen its digital business. The move, outlined in an internal memo, reflects a growing trend across media companies as they adapt to a shifting media landscape.

CNN CEO Mark Thompson, a veteran of the New York Times and BBC, is leading the charge to streamline the network and boost revenue. The plan includes merging news-gathering and digital news teams, investing in video operations, and launching a standalone subscription service for CNN.com. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create a profitable digital business for the future.

Additionally, CNN will establish a “TV Future Lab” to develop content for the Max streaming platform and adapt its TV offerings for digital channels. The restructuring will also involve changes to editorial workflows, including a centralized planning system and a new “story manager” role. The memo states that Thompson will discuss the plan with staff in a town hall meeting.
