A court in Ecuador has sentenced five people to prison terms ranging from 12 to 34 years for the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. Villavicencio was shot and killed in August 2023 while leaving a rally. This sentencing comes after a trial that began in late June.
Prosecutors accused two of the convicted of belonging to the Los Lobos crime gang, one of 22 criminal organizations labeled as terrorists by the Ecuadorian government. Carlos Edwin Angulo Lara, known as ‘El Invisible,’ was sentenced to 34 years and eight months for allegedly ordering the murder from prison. Laura Dayanara Castillo, accused of handling logistics for the assassination, also received a sentence of 34 years and eight months.

Erick Ramirez, Victor Flores, and Alexandra Chimbo were each sentenced to 12 years. The sentencing represents a significant step towards justice for Villavicencio and his family. However, a separate investigation is underway to determine who ordered the murder.
One of the hit men died at the scene of the crime, and seven other suspects were killed in prison while awaiting trial. Villavicencio’s widow, Veronica Sarauz, had publicly requested the court to deliver a harsh sentence against the accused.
