Germany to Gradually Phase Out Huawei From 5G Network

Germany has agreed in principle to phase out Chinese technology companies, including Huawei, from its 5G network over the next five years. The deal, driven by security concerns, will see components from these companies removed in stages.

By 2026, Chinese technology will be removed from the core 5G data centers. By 2029, their role in antennas, transmission lines, and towers will be largely eliminated. The agreement affects major German mobile operators Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefonica Deutschland (O2).

While the agreement is not yet finalized, it represents a significant step towards reducing Germany’s reliance on Chinese tech companies in its critical 5G infrastructure. This move aligns with a global trend of countries addressing security concerns regarding technology from China.

Germany’s interior ministry confirmed that discussions with mobile carriers are ongoing. The final details of the agreement are still being worked out, but the general direction is clear. Germany is committed to building a secure and reliable 5G network, and that means reducing its reliance on potentially risky technology.
