Imran Khan Acquitted in Marriage Case, But Remains in Jail

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been acquitted of charges of unlawful marriage by a Pakistani court. The court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove its case. However, Khan will not be released as authorities have issued new arrest warrants against him in three cases related to violence against the military and state installations. These incidents occurred following Khan’s arrest in May 2023.

Khan’s political party, PTI, has recently gained more seats in parliament, increasing pressure on the ruling coalition struggling to address the country’s economic crisis. The party claims the new charges against Khan are politically motivated.

Khan’s arrest and continued detention are seen by some as an attempt to weaken the PTI and its leader. This situation underscores the complex political dynamics in Pakistan, where legal proceedings and political maneuvering are intertwined.

Khan was previously jailed in August 2023. He was acquitted of charges of leaking state secrets last month. Two other corruption sentences have been suspended.

Despite the acquittal in the marriage case, Khan remains in custody pending the outcome of the new investigations.
