Russia Vows to Quickly Resolve Indian Soldiers Issue in Ukraine War

Russia has acknowledged the presence of Indian nationals fighting in its army during the Ukraine war and has pledged to find a “quick solution” to the issue. The statement, made by a top Russian diplomat, comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the concern with President Vladimir Putin during their meeting in Moscow this week. India has been advocating for the release of these Indians, who were allegedly lured to Russia with false promises of lucrative jobs and educational opportunities.

According to the Russian diplomat, most of the Indians fighting in the war were there for “commercial purposes,” while some were deceived by agents operating primarily from India. The diplomat also downplayed their impact on the war, stating that their numbers are “very few” and do not significantly affect the battlefield. India and Russia are now cooperating to resolve the issue, with plans for a joint investigation to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for the recruitment scheme. India has already arrested several suspected human traffickers and repatriated a number of Indian nationals from Russia.

Despite its close ties with Russia, India has not condemned the country’s invasion of Ukraine. However, during his visit, Modi used strong language to criticize the war, specifically highlighting the tragic deaths of innocent children. This incident, coupled with the issue of Indian soldiers, has thrust India into a difficult position as it attempts to balance its long-standing partnership with Russia with its humanitarian concerns.
