Harris Scores Debate Win, But Race Remains Tight

A new poll conducted by The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Siena College shows that Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris impressed voters with her performance in the first presidential debate against Republican challenger Donald Trump.

The survey, conducted between September 11th and 16th, found that 67% of likely US voters believe Harris did well in the debate, compared to 40% for Trump. This positive view was consistent across racial groups, age categories, and education levels.

Despite her strong showing, Harris hasn’t seen a significant shift in national polls. The race for the White House remains close, with Harris and Trump running even. However, Harris holds a narrow lead in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania.

The debate itself offered few specifics about either candidate’s economic plans. While Trump has pledged to cut corporate taxes and take a tougher stance on tariffs, Harris has vowed to increase corporate taxes. Analysts predict that Trump’s policies could boost company profits but potentially fuel inflation, while Harris’s proposals might negatively impact corporate returns.

The assassination attempt on Trump on Sunday could also impact the race, but it’s too early to say with certainty.
