Nepal Floods and Landslides: 11 Dead, 8 Missing After Heavy Rains

Heavy rains triggered landslides and flash floods in Nepal, killing at least 11 people and leaving 8 missing in the past 36 hours. Officials reported that the disaster also blocked key highways and roads, disrupting transportation and access to affected areas.

According to police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki, rescue workers are actively clearing landslides and debris to reopen blocked roads. Heavy equipment is being deployed to facilitate the efforts.

The Koshi River, known for its devastating floods in both Nepal and India, has reached a dangerous level. Authorities have opened all 56 sluice gates of the Koshi Barrage to manage the rising water flow, which is currently more than double its normal level.

Flooding has also impacted Kathmandu, the capital city, where several rivers have overflowed their banks, inundating homes and streets. Local media has shown residents wading through waist-deep water and using buckets to empty their houses.

The current heavy rains are part of the annual monsoon season in Nepal, which often brings landslides and floods. Since mid-June, the start of the monsoon, at least 50 people across Nepal have died due to landslides, floods, and lightning strikes.

The disastrous floods are not limited to Nepal. In the northeastern Indian state of Assam, floods have also claimed dozens of lives and displaced thousands of people in recent days.
