Poland to Spend 5% of GDP on Defense in 2025, Highest in NATO

Poland is set to significantly increase its defense spending in the coming years, aiming to dedicate 5% of its GDP to military capabilities by 2025. This commitment, announced by Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, makes Poland the highest defense spender in NATO on a proportional basis, surpassing even the United States.

Poland’s move is a direct response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, highlighting the country’s heightened concern over its security in the face of Russia’s aggression. The country has already ramped up defense spending to over 4% of GDP in 2023, reflecting a rapid commitment to strengthening its military capacity.

Further emphasizing this shift in strategy, Poland’s Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk has indicated a 10% increase in the defense budget in 2025, reaching a record high. The country’s military leadership has stressed the need for soldiers to be prepared for full-scale conflict, signaling a move towards a more aggressive defense posture.

This significant investment underscores Poland’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities and becoming a cornerstone of NATO’s eastern flank. As the country faces an increasingly volatile security environment, its defense spending is set to remain a key priority in the years to come.
