The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania as the suspect in Saturday’s attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Crooks was shot and killed by the Secret Service after allegedly firing shots at the stage where Trump was speaking.
The FBI is working to determine a motive for the attack, which resulted in one rally attendee’s death and critical injuries to two other spectators. Trump was also shot in the ear.

State voter records show that Crooks was a registered Republican. He graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022 and received a $500 “star award” from the National Math and Science Initiative. Interestingly, Crooks made a $15 donation to ActBlue, a political action committee that supports left-leaning and Democratic politicians, when he was 17.
The Federal Aviation Administration closed the airspace over Bethel Park on Sunday for “special security reasons.” Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, told CNN he was trying to understand what happened and would wait until he spoke to law enforcement before commenting further.
