The US Commerce Department announced plans to award Taiwanese semiconductor company GlobalWafers up to $400 million in government grants. This funding aims to significantly increase the production of silicon wafers, a crucial component in advanced semiconductors, within the United States. The projects, located in Texas and Missouri, will establish the first US production of 300-mm wafers for advanced semiconductors and expand the production of silicon-on-insulator wafers.
GlobalWafers’ $4 billion investment will create new wafer manufacturing facilities and expand existing ones, generating 1,700 construction jobs and 880 manufacturing jobs. This move aligns with the Biden administration’s efforts to bolster the domestic semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on foreign manufacturers.

The funding comes from the Chips and Science Act, a $52.7 billion program aimed at boosting domestic semiconductor output. The grant is one of 13 awards announced under the program, totaling $30.1 billion. While the awards are still pending finalization and subject to due diligence, they represent a significant step towards strengthening the US semiconductor industry.
